Santorum's theory of decline

Former Senator Rick Santorum offered an unusual explanation for the fall of the British Empire in his warning this evening to South Carolina Republicans that they must resist President Obama's health care overhaul.

Britain "isn't [the most powerful country in the world] any more because they stopped believing in themselves and they accepted the drug, the mediocrity of state control," he said.

Santorum also repeated an Obama adviser's notorious line: "Lead from behind."

"That's what the British Empire did," he said. "You can't be a superpower if you're focused on the government taking care of everybody."
