Iowa Rep. Tom Latham, who’s facing a potential head-to-head match-up with fellow Republican Rep. Steve King, is laying the groundwork for with a torrential cash haul.
Latham filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission on Friday indicating that he raised more than $414,000 during the first quarter – a sum indicating the nine-term congressman is preparing for a fight. Latham has just south of $1 million in the bank.
The takeaway far eclipses the $72,000 figure Latham raised in the first quarter of the 2010 cycle.
Among Latham’s donors: House Speaker John Boehner, a longtime Latham friend and ally who cut the congressman a $5,000 check through his Freedom Project political arm.
Iowa lawmakers approved a redistricting map on Thursday that placed Latham in the same northwest Iowa district as King, a tea party favorite and outspoken conservative who’s said he plans to run for reelection. King had yet to file his first-quarter report as of late Friday morning.
Latham could choose to forgo a race against King, however – some national and state Republicans suggest he could run against Democratic Rep. Leonard Boswell in a southwestern district that Latham has represented a significant portion of before.
Update: Latham announced he will indeed make the switch to the 3rd District, where he will challenge Boswell.
