It's Monday. "You can call me Pulse."
WHAT TO WATCH FOR – Senate Democrats could try to attach an amendment establishing a health insurance rate authority to financial regulatory reform, which faces its first vote today. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) took to the Senate floor and the HELP Committee last week to push for the agency, which President Obama wanted in the reform legislation but would not have survived reconciliation rules.
TODAY – Advocacy groups begin walking members through implementation of the health reform plan. Former Senate Majority Leaders Tom Daschle and Bill Frist speak to the American Hospital Association’s members during the group’s annual meeting today at 2:30 p.m. Reps. Chris Van Hollen and Michael Burgess speak at 8:30 a.m. HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plan to speak during tomorrow’s session. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce hosts a session on the impact on employers this morning.
PULSE POLITICS:
REFORM FIGHT 2.0? – AP’s Ricardo Alonso-Zaldivar reports: “What's it going to cost me? That's the single biggest unanswered question about President Barack Obama's new health care overhaul law - and its weak spot. Many experts believe the law falls short on taming costs, and that will force Congress to revisit health care in a few years. While it seems hard to believe now, Republicans might want to participate in a debate over costs, perhaps opening the way for limits on malpractice lawsuits and other ideas they've advocated. … For now, the political parties are too polarized – and lawmakers too exhausted – to contemplate health care 2.0. Conservatives are planning court challenges, and some Republican leaders hold out the promise of repeal. But economic reality probably will bring lawmakers back to the table.”
EXPECT TO HEAR THIS OFTEN – Nevada Appeal’s Sandi Hoover reports: “Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, while campaigning in Nevada to keep his Senate seat, said: ‘The most important thing we've done for the country and the world is health care.’”
LAW SPURS "TENTH AMENDMENT TASK FORCE" – Texas’ Abilene Reporter-News reports that 10 state House Republicans, including Reps. Randy Neugebauer and Mike Conaway, have formed a “Tenth Amendment task force” to study and limit federal mandates. “Many members, including myself, are very concerned about this massive hostile takeover by the government of the liberties and freedoms of the American people,” Neugebauer told the paper.
